What has become of gratitude?

Jesus questioned the lack of appreciation of the nine who had been healed. How often have we given or received gratitude? With the many things we have to do, expressing gratitude may be overlooked. We may put it off and then forget or we may assume the other person knows we are grateful. How many “thank you” notes or phone calls are postponed indefinitely?

Problems and difficulties are part of our lives. There are periods of sorrow when gratitude isn’t experienced. But maybe there has been a time of fullness where we felt just great and gratitude came easily. Gratefulness needs to be expressed, for it enriches the giver as well as the receiver. It opens one up to the possibilities and positive values in life.

Amid our daily problems, can we recognize moments of grace and healing? Can we, right now, think of a reason to be grateful? Let us do ourselves and the world a favor by expressing gratitude this day.
