5:10 Unlawful to Carry a Burden on the Sabbath

SABBATH LAWS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA: Jesus does not pray to relieve the patient’s sickness in case he [Jesus] should seem to be like one of the holy prophets. Rather, as the Lord of powers, he commands with authority that it be so. He tells him to go home rejoicing, to take his bed on his shoulders, to be a memento to those who would see the might of the one who had healed him. And so the man does as he is asked and by obedience and faith gains the threefold longed for grace,… Christ heals the man on the sabbath, and when healed immediately enjoins him to break through the custom of the law. He induces him to walk on the sabbath, and this while carrying his bed, although God clearly cries aloud by one of the holy prophets, “Neither carry a burden out of your house on the sabbath day.” And no one, I suppose, who is sober-minded would say the man was then a despiser or unruly in the face of the divine commands. They would instead see that, as in a type, Christ was making known to the Jews that they should be healed by obedience and faith in the last times of the world (for this is what I think “the sabbath” signifies, being the last day of the week). But once they have received healing through faith and are remodeled into a new life, it was necessary that the old letter of the law should become of no effect and that the typical worship in shadows and empty Jewish customs should be rejected. COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 2.5.

16:2b They Went to the Tomb

The sequence of burial events.

Bede: As to its being said in the gospel reading that holy women came to see the sepulcher “on the evening which was growing on toward the dawn of Sunday,” we should understand this thus: they started to come during the evening, but reached the sepulcher as the morning of Sunday was dawning; that is, they prepared the spices with which they wanted to anoint our Lord’s body on [Saturday] evening, but brought the spices that they had prepared in the evening to the sepulcher in the morning. Matthew, for the sake of brevity, wrote this more obscurely; but the other evangelists show more distinctly the order in which it was done. After our Lord had been buried on Friday, the women went away from the tomb and prepared spices and ointments for as long as it was permitted them to work. They then refrained from activity on the sabbath, in accord with they commandment, as Luke clearly reports. When the sabbath was over, as evening was coming on, the time for working had returned. Being resolute in their devotion, they bought the spices that they had not prepared [earlier] (as Mark records it) so that they might come and anoint him. Homilies on the gospels 2.7.

THE GRADUAL MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT.

Gregory of Nazianzus: [Christ’s disciples] were able to receive [the Spirit] on three occasions: before he was glorified by the passion, after he was glorified by the resurrection and after his ascension…. Now the first of these manifests him—the healing of the sick and casting out of evil spirits and so does that breathing on them after the resurrection, which was clearly a divine inspiration. And so too the present distribution of the fiery tongues. But the first manifested him indistinctly, the second more expressly, this present one more perfectly, since he is no longer present only in energy but… substantially, associating with us and dwelling in us. On Pentecost, Oration 41.11. Twofold giving of the spirit. Augustine: But the reason why, after his resurrection, he both gave the Holy Spirit, first on earth, and afterward sent him from heaven,” is in my judgment this: that “love is shed abroad in our hearts,” by that gift itself, whereby we love God and our neighbors, according to those two commandments, “on which hang all the law and the prophets.” And Jesus Christ signified this by giving them the Holy Spirit once on earth because of the love of our neighbor and a second rime from heaven because of the love of God, And if some other reason may perhaps be given for this double gift of the Holy Spirit, at any rate we ought not to doubt that the same Holy Spirit was given when Jesus breathed on them, of whom he says, “Go, baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of – the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” where this Trinity is especially commended to us. It is therefore he who was also given from heaven on the day of Pentecost, that is, ten days after the Lord ascended into heaven. On the Trinity

PASCHA

Glorious is our Paschal Festival and truly splendid this great assembly of the Christian people. And within this holy mystery are contained things both old and new. The celebration of this week, or rather its joyfulness, is shared by such a multitude, that not alone does man rejoice on earth, but even the powers of heaven are united with us in joyful celebration of Christ’s Resurrection. For now the angels, and the hosts of the archangels, also keep holiday this day. And stand waiting for the triumphant return from this earth of Christ Our Lord, Who is King of heaven. And the multitude of the blessed likewise rejoice, proclaiming the Christ Who was begotten before the daystar rose (Ps. 109:3). The earth rejoices, now washed by divine blood. The sea rejoices, honored as it was by His feet upon its waters. And ever more let each soul rejoice, who is born again of water and the Holy Spirit; and at last set free from the ancient curse!

With such great joy does Christ fill our hearts this day by His Resurrection, not alone because He gives us the gladness of this day, but because He has also given us salvation through His Passion, immortality through His Death, healing for our wounds and resurrection from our fall!

PALM SUNDAY:

By St. Andrew of Crete

Let us go together to meet Christ on the Mount of Olives. Today he returns from Bethany and proceeds of his own free will toward his holy and blessed passion, to consummate the mystery of our salvation. He who came down from heaven to raise us from the depths of sin, to raise us with himself, we are told in Scripture, above every sovereignty, authority and power, and every other name that can be named, now comes of his own free will to make his journey to Jerusalem. He comes without pomp or ostentation. As the psalmist says: He will not dispute or raise his voice to make it heard in the streets. He will be meek and humble, and he will make his entry in simplicity. Let us run to accompany him as he hastens toward his passion, and imitate those who met him then, not by covering his path with garments, olive branches or palms, but by doing all we can to prostrate ourselves before him by being humble and by trying to live as he would wish.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT

“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life.” Mark 10:45 Verses 17 and 32 sound the note of Jesus being “on the way”— on the way to Jerusalem, on the way of the cross, with his disciples following along behind. While on the way, Jesus again speaksof his coming passion and death (verses 32-34). This is the third explicit prediction of his suffering and resurrection we find in the gospels. How many additional times he tried to convey the same message to his followers we do not know: in biblical symbolism, three is often a sign of emphasis rather than simply the number between two and four.

We should understand the incident of the rich man in light of verses 33 and 34 and what they imply about discipleship. Jesus invites the man to give his wealth to the poor and “then come, follow me” (verse 21). If the way of Jesus is the way of the cross, then anyone who would come after Jesus must also follow the way of self-sacrificing love. The disciples protest against the difficulty of this way (verses 24,26), for it is as narrow as the eye of a needle (verse 25). Only the grace of God can pull our camel-sized selves through the needle and into his kingdom (verse 27).

The disciples again demonstrate their need for God’s grace by wanting power and glory for themselves (verse 37). Jesus must again instruct them in the way they are to think and behave (verses 42-44) – which is the way he served his Father, by giving up his life as a ransom for many (verse 45).

* For reflection: What has Jesus asked me to give up in order that I may be free to follow him? What has he asked me to do for others in imitation of his laying down his life for them?

* Prayer starter: Lord Jesus, you have asked me to be perfect as your Father is perfect. Give me the grace to do what it is impossible for me to do on my own.

Mk 9:22 If You Can! All Things Are Possible to Him Who Believes

THE INFIRM FAITH OF THE BOY’S FATHER.

CHRYSOSTOM: The Scripture indicates that this man was extremely weak in faith, as is evident at four points: from Christ’s saying that “All things are possible to him that believes;” from the saying of the man himself as he approached, “Help me in my unbelief;” from Christ’s commanding the devil to “enter no more into him.;” and from the man’s saying again to Christ, “If you can.” THE GOSPEL OF ST. THIRD SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT

“Never leave your house without making the sign of the cross. It will be to you a staff, a weapon, an impregnable fortress. Neither man nor demon will dare to attack you, seeing you covered with such powerful armor. Let this sign teach you that you are a soldier, ready to combat against the demons, and ready to fight for the crown of justice. Are you ignorant of what the cross has done? It has vanquished death, destroyed sin, emptied hell, dethroned Satan, and restored the universe. Would you then doubt its power?”

JESUS HEALS A PARALYTIC

THEOPHYL. But though their thoughts were laid bare, still they remain insensible, refusing to believe that He who knew their hearts could forgive sins, wherefore the Lord proves to them the cure of the soul by that of the hotly, showing time invisible by the visible, that which is more difficult by that which is easier, although they did not look upon it as such. For the Pharisees thought it more difficult to heal the body, as being more open to view; but the soul more easy to cure, because the cure is invisible; so that they reasoned thus, Lo, He does not now cure the body, but heals the unseen soul; if He had had more power, lie would at once have cured the body, and not have fled for refuge to the unseen world. The Savior, therefore, showing that He can do both, says, which is the easier? as if He said, I indeed by the healing of time body, which is in reality more easy, but appears to you more difficult, will prove to you the health of the soul, which is really more difficult.

Great Things Come Out of Nazareth.

Cyril of Alexandria: Nathanael readily agrees that he expects great things to appear out of Nazareth. It is, I suppose, perfectly clear that not only did he take Nazareth as a pledge of what he sought but, bringing together knowledge from Moses and the prophets as one fond of learning, he gained a pretty quick understanding. “Come and see,” [Philip] says. Sight will suffice for faith. All you need to do is talk with him, and you will be all the more ready to confess and say without hesitation that he is indeed the expected One. But we must also believe that there was a divine and ineffable grace flowing from the words of our Savior that proved alluring for the souls of his hearers…. For since his word is mighty in power, it is also efficacious to persuade. Commentary on the Gospel of John 2.1.
