FIFTH SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT
“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life.” Mark 10:45 Verses 17 and 32 sound the note of Jesus being “on the way”— on the way to Jerusalem, on the way of the cross, with his disciples following along behind. While on the way, Jesus again speaksof his coming passion and death (verses 32-34). This is the third explicit prediction of his suffering and resurrection we find in the gospels. How many additional times he tried to convey the same message to his followers we do not know: in biblical symbolism, three is often a sign of emphasis rather than simply the number between two and four.
We should understand the incident of the rich man in light of verses 33 and 34 and what they imply about discipleship. Jesus invites the man to give his wealth to the poor and “then come, follow me” (verse 21). If the way of Jesus is the way of the cross, then anyone who would come after Jesus must also follow the way of self-sacrificing love. The disciples protest against the difficulty of this way (verses 24,26), for it is as narrow as the eye of a needle (verse 25). Only the grace of God can pull our camel-sized selves through the needle and into his kingdom (verse 27).
The disciples again demonstrate their need for God’s grace by wanting power and glory for themselves (verse 37). Jesus must again instruct them in the way they are to think and behave (verses 42-44) – which is the way he served his Father, by giving up his life as a ransom for many (verse 45).
* For reflection: What has Jesus asked me to give up in order that I may be free to follow him? What has he asked me to do for others in imitation of his laying down his life for them?
* Prayer starter: Lord Jesus, you have asked me to be perfect as your Father is perfect. Give me the grace to do what it is impossible for me to do on my own.
