PILGRIMAGE:

Sisters of the Order of St. Basil 91th Annual Pilgrimage, 500 West Main Street, in Uniontown will be held over Labor Day weekend. Seeker of the Lost is this year’s Pilgrimage.

CHURCH PICNIC:

ALL parishioners are invited to Infant Jesus of Prague annual church picnic on Wednesday, July 30th @ 5:30 in the church pavilion. Meats, condiments and beverages will be provided. Please bring you favorite side dish or dessert. There is a sign-up sheet on the back table. We hope to see everyone there!!!

FAITH & FUN DAY FOR ALTAR SERVERS:

The Vocation Office of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh is sponsoring a Faith & Fun Day for parish altar servers on Monday, August 4^th. The day will include Divine Liturgy with Archbishop William, trip to the zoo, and to Turf attack and then a Pirates baseball game at PNC Park. Please let Fr. Michael know ASAP if any altar server will like to attend.

CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE:

The Archdiocese of Pittsburgh will again honor couples who are celebrating significant year anniversaries of their marriage-10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 or additional years that are multiples of five during 2025. The celebration will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at St. Elias Church. Please call Paula @ (330)799-5983 by August 3^rd to sign up. If you are unable to attend, certificates will still be mailed.

BLESSING OF THE CARS:

Father Michael will be blessing cars after this week’s liturgies for Elijah the Prophet.

BASILICA & NATIONAL SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF LEBANON:

The Annual Pilgrimage at Our Lady of Lebanon, 2759 N Lipkey Road in North Jackson will be held August 13-15^th. On Thursday, August 14^th @ 7:00 pm. Archbishop William Skurla will have liturgy.

SANCTUARY CANDLES:

RISE AND WALK.

JEROME: It is easier said than done. Whether the sins of the paralytic were forgiven, only he who forgave them knew for sure. “Arise and walk”: both he who arose and those who saw him arise were able to vouch for this. Hence there is a bodily sign in order to demonstrate a spiritual sign, though its impact is to curb the imperfections of body and soul. And we are given an understanding of sin and many bodily weaknesses to come. Perhaps, too, sins are forgiven first, so that with the causes of infirmity removed health may be restored. COMMENTARY ON MATTHEW I.9.5.

lord, I am not worthy.

Augustine: When the Lord promised to go to the centurion’s house to heal his servant, the centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.” By viewing himself as unworthy, he showed himself worthy for Christ to come not merely into his house but also into his heart. He would not have said this with such great faith and humility if he had not already welcomed in his heart the One who came into his house. It would have been no great joy for the Lord Jesus to enter into his house and not to enter his heart. For the Master of humility both by word and example sat down also in the house of a certain proud Pharisee, Simon, and though he sat down in his house, there was no place in his heart. For in his heart the Son of Man could not lay his head. Sermon 62.1.

“Apostles of Christ, pillars and foundations of the city of God” … [the] liturgy sings. Their martyrdom is considered the true act of birth of the Church of Rome. The two Apostles gave their supreme witness close to each other in time and place: here in Rome, St. Peter was crucified and afterwards St. Paul was decapitated. Their blood mingled as if in a single witness to Christ, which prompted St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, in the middle of the second century to speak of the “Church founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious Apostles, Peter and Paul” (Adversus Haereses 3, 3, 2). A little later, from North Africa, Tertullian exclaimed: “How happy is the Church of Rome on which the Apostles poured forth all their doctrine along with their blood” (De Praescriptione Haereticorum, 36). For this very reason the Bishop of Rome, the Successor of the Apostle Peter, carries out a special ministry at the service of the doctrinal and pastoral unity of the People of God scattered across the world.

THE VALUE OF LIFE.

CHRYSOSTOM: Note the acceleration of images: just when the lilies are decked out, he no longer calls them lilies but “grass of the field.”13 He then points further to their vulnerable condition by saying “which are here today.” Then he does not merely say “and not tomorrow” but rather more callously “cast into the oven.” These creatures are not merely “clothed” but “so clothed” in this way as to be later brought to nothing. Do you see how Jesus everywhere abounds in amplifications and intensifications? And he does so in order to press his points home. So then he adds, “Will he not much more clothe you?” The force of the emphasis is on “you” to indicate covertly how great is the value set upon your personal existence and the concern God shows for you in particular. It is as though he were saying, “You, to whom he gave a soul, for whom he fashioned a body, for whose sake he made everything in creation, for whose sake he sent prophets, and gave the law, and wrought those innumerable good works, and for whose sake he gave up his only begotten Son.” THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW, HOMILY 22.1.14

THE APOSTLES’ FAST (PETROVKA)

Fast begins the day after All Saints Sunday. It is a time of reflection and

preparation leading up to the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29), who are recognized as two of the most prominent figures in our faith. During this fast, we remember the importance of fasting, prayers, and almsgiving after the festive paschal season and as we look to increased relaxation and refreshment during the summer months. We are also encouraged to reflect on the teachings and work of these two apostles, who were instrumental in spreading the gospel to different parts of the world. St. Peter, known as the rock on which the church was built, was a fisherman who became one of Jesus closest disciples. He preached the gospel with great zeal and conviction, and his work laid the foundation for the establishment of the Christian church. St. Paul, on the other hand, was a former persecutor of Christians who later became one of the most influential figures in the early church. He travelled extensively, spreading the gospel to different regions and establishing churches. Both Saints Peter and Paul showed great love for their people and ultimately gave their lives for Christ.

SIMPLY SLAVIC:

Simply Slavic will be Friday, June 13^th (5-11 pm) and Saturday, June 14^th (noon-midnight) at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre in downtown Youngstown. Come and celebrate the rich traditions of Eastern Europe with live music, folk dancing performances, homemade food, and bonfire after dark and more.

There is Life in the Church because in the Church is the Spirit

My brothers and sisters, if you want the Holy Spirit to dwell in you, listen carefully. Our spirit, by means of which each individual lives, is called the soul. And look what the soul does in the body. It gives life to all the limbs. It sees with the eyes, hears with the ears, smells with the nose, speaks with the tongue, works with the hands, walks with the feet. It is present at one and the same time in all the limbs to make them live. It gives life to all the limbs arid to each limb its function. It is not the eye that hears, not the ear that sees, not the eye or the ear that speaks. Yet they are nonetheless alive. The ear is alive, the tongue is alive. Their functions are different, the life is the same. The Church of God is like that. By means of some believers she performs miracles, by means of others she teaches the truth; by means of some she keeps virginity, by means of others she respects marital fidelity. The tasks are different, the life is the same. What the soul is to the body of a human being, the Holy Spirit is to the Body of Christ, the Church. The Holy Spirit does for the whole Church what the soul does for the body of the individual. Look then and see what you ought to fear and what you ought to avoid. If the body suffers an amputation (for example of a finger or a hand or a foot) does the soul go with the limb that has been cut off? While it was in the body, that limb was alive; when it is cut off it loses its life. It is like that with Christians. They are alive only while they are in the Body. If they are cut off from the Body, the Holy Spirit is no longer with them.

Hilary of Poitiers: He does not say that the day or the time but that the hour has come. An hour contains a portion of a day. What was this hour?… He was now to be spit on, scourged, crucified. But the Father glorifies the Son. The sun, instead of setting, fled, and all the other elements felt that same shock of the death of Christ. The stars in their courses, to avoid complicity in the crime, escaped by self-extinction from beholding the scene. The earth trembled under the weight of our Lord hanging on the cross and testified that it did not have the power to hold within it him who was dying…. The centurion proclaimed, “Truly this was the Son of God.” Creation is set free by the mediation of this sin offering. The very rocks lose their solidity and strength. Those who had nailed him to the cross confess that truly this is the Son of God. The outcome justifies the assertion. Our Lord had said, “Glorify your Son,” testifying that he was not the Son in name only but properly the Son. “Your Son,” he said. Many of us are sons [children] of God. But he is Son in another sense. He is the proper, true Son by nature, not by adoption; in truth, not in name; by birth, not by creation. After he was glorified, that centurion’s confession touched on the truth. And so, when the centurion confesses him to be the true Son of God, none of his believers might doubt what one of his persecutors could not deny. On the Trinity 3.10-11.

BYZANTINE SOCIAL CLUB COOKOUT:

It is that time of year to start using our pavilion!!!!!! The Byzantine Social Club of Infant Jesus is hosting a cookout on Wednesday, May 28^th in the church pavilion (weather permitting) @ 5:000 pm. ALL PARISHIONERS ARE INVITED!!!!!! MEMORIAL DAY

Heavenly Father, on this Memorial Day, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the example of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops and fill their homes and their lives with your strength and peace. In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and justice, and thus, seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Various Reasons for Trials.

Gregory the Great: One blow falls on the sinner for punishment only, not conversion. Illumination of the Spirit enables worship.

Basil the Great: To worship in the Spirit implies that our intelligence has been enlightened. Consider the words spoken to the Samaritan woman. She was deceived by local custom into believing that worship could only be offered in a specific place. But the Lord, attempting to correct her, said that worship ought to be offered in Spirit and in truth. By truth he clearly meant himself. If we say that worship offered in the Son (the truth) is worship offered in the Father’s image, we can say the same about worship offered in the Spirit since the Spirit in himself reveals the divinity of the Lord. The Holy Spirit cannot be divided from the Father and the Son in worship. If you remain outside the Spirit, you cannot worship at all, and if you are in him you cannot separate him from God. Light cannot be separated from what it makes visible, and it is impossible for you to recognize Christ, the image of the invisible God, unless the Spirit enlightens you. Once you see the image, you cannot ignore the light; you see the light and the image simultaneously. It is fitting that when we see Christ, the brightness of God’s glory, it is always through the illumination of the Spirit. Through Christ the image, may we be led to the Father, for he bears the seal of the Father s very likeness. On the

Spirit 26.64.
