the redemptive motive OF THE master.

Chrysostom: Do you see again how generous he was? The servant asked only for an extension of time, but he gave him more than he asked for, remission and forgiveness of the entire debt. He wanted to give him this from the start, but he did not want the giving to be on his side only. He wanted the servant to learn from it and to ask for mercy, in order than he not be under an illusion of innocence. For that the whole was the Lord—even if the servant fell on his knees and implored—is demonstrated by the motive for the remission, for it says, “Out of pity the lord released him.” In this way he also wanted the servant to take some responsibility, to prevent him being too much put to shame, and so that he might learn from his own case and be lenient to his fellow servant, and schooled in his own calamities, the gospel of Matthew, homily 61.3.

THE FAST BEFORE THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY. According to tradition, our heavenly Mother in preparation for her death prayed and fasted. In imitation of her and for proper spiritual preparation for the glorious feast of the Assumption, the Church prescribes for her faithful a fasting period of two weeks. It begins on the 1st of August, that is, on the feast of the martyred Maccabees. It is also called “Spasovka” (Savior’s Fast).

The feast of the Dormition, to which the fast owes its name, does not commemorate the death of the Mother of God, but her transition from to everlasting life in heaven. Christians believe that the Most Holy Theotokos intercedes for the Christians at the throne of the Lord for all the faithful who invoke Her name in prayer.

The Dormition Fast has been observed since the time of the early church, and its first mentions in historical records date back to the fifth century. The Constantinople Council of 1166 determined when the Dormition of the Theotokos fast should end and start.

Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the First Six Ecumenical Councils

The Church venerates the Holy Fathers of the Ecumenical Councils because Christ has established them as “lights upon the earth,” guiding us to the true Faith. “Adorned with the robe of truth,” the doctrine articulated by the Church Fathers, based upon the preaching of the Apostles, has defined the one faith of the Church. The Ecumenical Councils are the highest authority in the Church. Such Councils, guided by the grace of the Holy Spirit, and accepted by the Church, are infallible.

Here is a brief listing of when and what they dealt with:

•           1st in Nicaea in 325: Refuted Arian heresy and affirmed Jesus is Son of God. The first part of the creed is composed.

•           2nd in Constantinople in 381: Refuted heresy of Macedonius and affirmed Holy Spirit is God. The second part of creed is composed.

•           3rd in Ephesus in 431: Refuted heresy of Nestorius and affirmed Mary is the Mother of God.

•           4th in Chalcedon in 451: Refuted Monophysite heresy and affirmed Jesus is one person with two natures: Divine and human. These natures are distinct, unconfused, and in perfect harmony.

•           5th in Constantinople in 553: Condemned errors of Origen and certain writings of others such as Theodoret, Theodore of Mopsuestia, and of Ibas. Reconfirmed first four councils.

•           6th in Constantinople in 680: Refuted the Monothelite heresy and confirmed Christ has two wills: Divine and human which are distinct, unconfused, and in perfect harmony with one another.

Mt. 9:32 A Demoniac Brought to Jesus

Chrysostom: For the condition was not a natural one but was the scheme of a demon. It is also for this reason that the man needs others to lead him to Jesus. For he could not make a request by himself, because he was unable to speak; and he also could not petition others, because the demon had bound his tongue and along with his tongue had shackled his soul. Because of this Jesus did not even demand faith from him but immediately corrected the man’s disorder. For it says, “After the demon had been cast out, the mute person spoke.”

“And the crowds were amazed, saying, It has never been seen this way in Israel.’ ” This statement especially bothered the Pharisees, because the crowds placed Jesus before everyone else— not merely before people who lived at that time but even before all who had ever lived. And they put him first, not because he was healing people but because he healed easily; he healed quickly;

he healed countless cases of disease; he healed diseases that were incurable. Hence the people reacted in this way. the gospel of Matthew, homily 32.I.

Your sins are forgiven

John Chrysostom.: Above, He said to the paralytic, “Thy sins are forgiven thee,” not, I forgive thee thy sins; but now when the Scribes made resistance, He shews the greatness of His power by saying, “The Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins.” And to shew that He was equal to the Father, He said not that the Son of Man needed any to forgive sins, but that “He hath power.”

HILARY: Now in the narrative of the paralytic a number of people are brought forward for healing. Jesus’ words of healing are worthy of reflection. The paralytic is not told/Be healed.” He is not told/Rise and walk.” But he is told, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven you.” The paralytic is a descendent of the original man, Adam. In one person, Christ, all the sins of Adam are forgiven. In this case the person to be healed is brought forward by ministering angels. In this case, too, he is called a son, because he is God’s first work. The sins of his soul are forgiven him, and pardon of the first transgression is granted. We do not believe the paralytic committed any sin [that resulted in his illness], especially since the Lord said elsewhere that blindness from birth had not been contracted from someone’s sin or that of his parents. ON MATTHEW 8.5.

The Devil has not Full Power

Among the angelic powers the chief of the terrestrial order, the one to whom God had entrusted the task of looking after the earth, was not evil by nature, he had not received any trace of evi1 from his creator. He was good. However, he did not maintain the light and the honor that God had given him. By a deliberate act of his own free will he rebelled against the Creator. He turned his face away from goodness and fell into evil. Evil is in fact is merely the absence of good, as darkness is the absence of light. A host of angels placed under his command followed him in the fall. Despite their angelic nature, they also freely plunged from goodness down to evil and became wicked. The devils cannot do anything against us without God s permission. But with God’s permission they are powerful. All wickedness, all the passions are inspired by them But listen: God allows them to suggest sin to a person, but they cannot force him to do it. We ourselves are responsible for accepting or rejecting their seductive suggestions. By St. John Damascene – The Orthodox Faith, 2, 4 (PG94,873ff.)

FATHER’S DAY
By St. Clement of Alexandria – The Teacher, I, 9 (PG8, 340)
The Word that Hurts but Heals

The word of Wisdom exhorts us thus: ‘Have you sons? Discipline them and break them in from their earliest years. Have you daughters? See that they are chaste, and do not be too lenient with them.’ [Ecclus. 7:23-24] It is true that we love our own children very much, more than anything else. But those who speak only gentle words to them are in fact loving the children they are afraid of hurting only a little. On the other hand, those who correct them strictly are hurting them today but doing them good for the future. Our Lord did not seek what is comfortable today for us. Rather he sought for us a good future. So let us follow his educational method inspired by love. This admonition is a loving reproof that enlightens the mind. Christ our teacher had recourse to it when, for example, he said: ‘O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!’ [Matt. 23:37] Reproof may be made with contempt. Reproof may be made with vehemence, as a violent censure. But reproof may be made to lay bare sins. This is the kind of correction the Lord is constrained to use because in so many people faith has evaporated. Reproof and correction hurt the soul that they heal of its faults. But they keep the death of the soul at bay.

Matthew 6:24 God and Mammon

SERVING Two MASTERS:

CHRYSOSTOM: Now Jesus calls mammon here “a master,” not because of its own nature but on account of the wretchedness of those who bow themselves beneath it.1 (According to a line of reasoning daring back to Clement of Alexandria, Chrysostom explains that riches are not evil in their very nature but in the evil use to which they are put, which causes humankind so much unhappiness.) So also he calls the stomach a god, (Phil 3:19.)

not from the dignity of such a mistress but from the wretchedness of those enslaved. To have mammon for your master is already worse itself than any later punishment and enough retribution before the punishment for any one trapped in it. For what condemned criminals can be so wretched as the providence of God, even where we seem to be active, that finally accompanies everything. In the light of God’s providence, none of our cares, anxieties, toils or any other such things will ever come to anything, but all will utterly pass away. THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW, HOMILY 21.3.

How jesus called His first disciples.

chrysostom: “And they left their nets, and followed him.” And yet John (the Evangelist) says that they were called in a different way. From this it is evident that this was a second call. One may conclude this from several evidences. For there it is said that they came to him when “John had not yet been thrown into prison” but here it says after he was in confinement. And there Andrew calls Peter, but here Jesus calls both. On the one hand, John says, “Jesus saw Simon coming and said, ‘You are Simon, the Son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas, which is translated Peter.’” On the other hand, Matthew says that he was already called by that name, for he says, “Seeing Simon who was called Peter.” … In the other instance, Andrew is seen corning into his house and hearing many things. But here, having heard one brief call, they both followed immediately. When they earlier had seen that John was in prison and that Jesus was withdrawing, it would not have been unnatural for them to return again to their own craft, fishing, having followed him at the beginning and then later having left him to fish. Accordingly, you now see that Jesus finds them actively fishing. But he neither resisted them at first when they desired to withdraw from him, nor having withdrawn themselves, did he let them go altogether. He gave way when they moved aside from him and came again to win them back. This, after all, is exactly what fishing is all about. the gospel of Matthew, homily 14.
