21st Sunday After Pentecost

By Fr. Gary Powell, O.F.M. Cap.

We are told in the Gospel today from St. Luke (8:5-15) that loving God and neighbor means two things: to hear the Word of God and to keep it. Many Jews in the time, of Christ were farmers. They understood about planting, good soil, watering, growing crops. And so Christ said that spreading God’s Word was just like that, like planting seeds. You’ve got to do it at the right time, in the right place, in the right way. Jesus said that some people just don’t want to hear God’s Word at a certain time, or place, or way. And that is why God’s Word doesn’t help them. That’s why they don’t bear fruit. But for those who really want God’s Word, it opens new worlds. It gives them courage to carry one, enlightens their thoughts and words, bring love to their actions. Christ’s own words are: “The seed on good ground are those who hear the word in a spirit of openness, retain it, and bear fruit through perseverance.” (Verse 15). “Bear fruit through perseverance.” That’s the really important part. It’s rather easy to be part of a crowd listening to God’s Word about love and justice, the rights of others, our duties in life. But to carry them out in perseverance, in our daily lives, day after day, that is another thing. Or again, some of us might be a bit choosy. We like to hear the nice words about love and reward and unity. But when Christ speaks to us about the sins we commit, the injustices we do, or about the punishments these sins deserve, we don’t want to hear that kind of Word of God at all. We are not consistent. We just look for the easy side of things. Unless we accept God’s message in its entirety we really are not listening. Unless we put into practice the whole of God’s law to the best of our ability, we really are not bearing fruit through perseverance.

THE CHURCH, THE SORROWING MOTHER. AMBROSE: Although there is grave sin that you cannot wash away yourself with the tears of your penitence, let the mother of the church weep for you. She who intercedes for all as a widowed mother for only sons is she who suffers with the spiritual grief of nature when she perceives her children urged on to death by mortal sins. We are heart of her heart, for there is also a spiritual heart that Paul has, saying, “Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.” We are the heart of the church, since we are members of his Body, of his flesh and of his bones, Let the pious mother grieve, let the crowd, too, help. Let not only the crowd but also a multitude feel pity for a good parent. Already at the funeral you will arise, already will you be re-leased from the sepulcher; the attendants at your funeral will stand still, you will begin to speak words of life, all will be afraid; for very many are corrected by the example of one. They will praise God, who has bestowed upon us such great help for the avoidance of death.

Pray for All People

By St. John Chrysostom

The priest is the common father, as it were, of the whole world. It is proper, therefore, that he should care for all, even as God Whom he serves. For this reason, the apostle Paul writes, “I urge then, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings (lit: Eucharists) be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim 2:14).

From this two advantages result. First, hatred is done away with towards those outside the Church, for no one can feel hatred towards those for whom is prays. And those who are prayed for become better because of the prayers, and they lose their ferocious disposition towards us. For nothing is so apt to draw people to the Christian teaching as love and being loved. Think what it was for those who persecuted, scourged, banished and slaughtered the first Christians to hear that those whom they treated so barbarously offered fervent prayers to God for them.

The Secret of the Peace We Need

Those who are engaged in spiritual warfare must always keep their hearts tranquil. Only then can the mind sift the impulses it receives and store in the treasure house of the memory those that are good and come from God, while rejecting altogether those that are perverse and devilish. “When the sea is calm, the fishermen’s eyes can see the movements of the fish deep down, so that hardly any of them can escape. But when the sea is ruffled by the wind, the turmoil of the waves hides from sight the creatures that would easily have been seen if the sea wore the smile of calm. The skill of the fisherman is of little use in rough weather. Something of the same sort happens with the soul, especially when it is stirred to the depths by anger. At the beginning of a storm, oil is poured on the waters to calm them, and in fact the oil defeats their commotion. In this way, when the soul receives the anointing of the gift of the Holy Spirit, it gladly gives in to this inexpressible and untroubled sweetness. And even if it is continually attacked by temptation, it maintains its peace and joy.

walking requires Two feet.

Caesarius of Arles: When the Lord tells us in the Gospel that anyone who wants to be his follower must renounce himself, the injunction seems harsh; we think he is imposing a burden on us. But an order is no burden when it is given by one who helps in carrying it out. To what place are we to follow Christ if not where he has already gone? We know that he has risen and ascended into heaven; there, then, we must follow him. There is no cause for despair—by ourselves we can do nothing, but we have Christ’s promise…. One who claims to abide in Christ ought to walk as he walked. Would you follow Christ? Then be humble as he was humble. Do not scorn his lowliness if you want to reach his exaltation. Human sin made the road rough. Christ’s resurrection leveled it. By passing over it himself he transformed the narrowest of tracks into a royal highway. Two feet are needed to run along this highway; they are humility and charity. Everyone wants to get to the top—well, the first step to take is humility. Why take strides that are too big for you—do you want to fall instead of going up? Begin with the first step, humility, and you will already be climbing. Sermons 159, 1.4-6.

16th Sunday After Pentecost

Collegeville Bible Commentary

Mt. 25:14-30 The talents (see Luke 19:11-27). The parable of the talents has many elements found in the preceding passage, but it concentrates on the judgment scene (vv. 19-30). The master (the Son of Man) goes away and distributes various sums of money to three servants. The Greek word that describes these sums is “talents.” The parable is the source of the English term “talent” as the description of a natural ability that can be improved by diligent practice. Though there are three servants in the parable, they really constitute two groups: the two who invest and double the amount, and the one who buries the money. The master is away for a long time, and suddenly he returns and demands an accounting (v. 19). The accounting is dearly the last Judgment. It involves rewards for the two servants who doubled the sums given to them (vv. 20-23) and punishment for the servant who did nothing (vv. 24-30). Constant watchfulness demands fruitful action and even boldness.

22;44 Sit at My Right Hand

The lord said TO my lord. Incomplete work on Matthew: The judgmental Jewish leaders were tempting Christ the man. They would not have tempted him if they had believed that he were the Son of God. Christ therefore was ready to show himself to them. He knew the dishonesty in their hearts. He was ready to show them that it was not a man who was tempted but God, whom no one is able to tempt. He was not able to say straightforwardly the truth about himself or to keep silent. He was not able to speak openly, lest the Jews, in finding a greater occasion for blasphemy, be all the more enraged. However, it was not possible to silence the truth that had come to him in order that he might let this same truth be known. And it was for this reason that he propounded this ingenious question to them, in order that while he was silent his question itself might show them that he was not a man but God. So he asks directly, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord?” For how was it possible for him to be his Lord who was yet to be born from David? I think that he posed this question not only against the ancient Pharisees but against our contemporary heretics as well. For he was the Son of David according to the flesh but Lord according to his divinity. Homily 42.

Mt 22:11 A Guest with No Wedding Garment

No wedding garment. Gregory THE great: But since you have already come into the house of the marriage feast, our holy church, as a result of God’s generosity, be careful, my friends, lest when the King enters he find fault with some aspect of your heart’s clothing. We must consider what comes next with great fear in our hearts. But the king came in to look at the guests and saw there a person not clothed in a wedding garment.

What do we think is meant by the wedding garment, dearly beloved? For if we say it is baptism or faith, is there anyone who has entered this marriage feast without them? A person is outside because he has not yet come to believe, What then must we understand by the wedding garment but love? That person enters the marriage feast, but without wearing a wedding garment, who is present in the holy church. He may have faith, but he does not have love. We are correct when we say that love is the wedding garment because this is what our Creator himself possessed when he came to the marriage feast to join the church to himself. Only God’s love brought it about that his only begotten Son united the hearts of his chosen to himself. John says that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son for us.” Forty gospel homilies 38.9.

Mt. 21:42 The Lord’s Doing Is Marvelous

christ THE great stone.

incomplete work on matthew: Christ is called a stone for two reasons. First, because his foundation is solid and no one who stands upon him will fall victim to deceitful charms or be moved by the storms of persecution. Second, Christ is called a stone because in him is the ultimate destruction of the wicked, for just as everything which collides with a stone is shattered while the stone itself remains intact, so also everyone who opposes the Christian faith will himself be ruined, but Christianity will remain untouched. This is the sense in which Christ is the great stone. “Whoever falls on it will be broken to pieces, but it will crush those upon whom it falls.”17 It is one thing to be broken but something else again to be crushed, for sizeable pieces of whatever is broken remain, but whatever gets crushed is reduced to dust and utterly eliminated. The stone does not break those who fall upon it, but they break themselves who fall on the stone. Their destruction therefore is not attributable to the stone’s strength but to the violence with which they fall upon it. homily 40.

What must I Do to inherit eternal life?

Chrysostom: And, behold, one came and said to him, “Good Master, what deed must I do to inherit eternal life?” Some criticize this young man as dissembling and wicked, approaching Jesus to put him to the test. I would not hesitate to say that he is avaricious and greedy since Christ also showed him up as such. Yet I would by no means call him a dissembler, because it is not safe to venture on things uncertain and especially in a case of blame. Such is also true because Mark has taken away the suspicion of dissembling. For Mark says, “A man ran up and kneeling before him asked him” and “Jesus looking upon him loved him.” The tyranny of money is a powerful thing, as is clear here. Though we are practiced in the other virtues, avarice brings the others to ruin. the gospel of Matthew, homily 63.1.
