 22nd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

St. Ephrem the Syrian – The Lord compared the priests of the people with him who was clothed in purple. Nothing is more honored than purple clothing. He compared the disciples of the cross with Lazarus. There were none more lowly than Lazarus was. He revealed the names of his beloved ones through Lazarus, his beloved one. He also wished to reveal the name of his enemies through the words, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets.” It is not the case that all those living are alive, or that all those buried are dead.

Jesus Christ The Sower

Saint Theophilus the Confessor, Archbishop of Bulgaria, teaches:

“He came out of the bosom of the Father, from invisibility, and became visible. He who always sows came out. Because the Son of God does not stop always sowing in our souls. The Lord sows through preachers who proclaim the truth, not their own, but inspired by the Spirit of Truths, sowing the seeds of the saving teaching of Christ. The apostles sent by the savior to preach went all over the world announcing the Gospel of the Kingdom to all creation. They did not announce their own teaching, but announced to everyone the Divine teaching, announced to them by the Lord Himself, who guided them to all truth, making them mystics. The work of the preaching of Christ’s apostles was continued by the holy martyrs and confessors, who glorified the crucified and risen Christ not only with their prayers, but also with their pious deeds. Their banner was taken up by the saints of Christ, the holy fathers and teachers of the Church… the holy and the righteous, each sowing seeds in his [or her] own field The gracious word of God.”

Council of Nicaea II

“But since some find fault with us for worshipping and honoring the image of our Savior and that of our Lady, and those, too, of the rest of the saints and servants of Christ, let them remember that in the beginning God created man after His own image. On what grounds, then, do we show reverence to each other unless because we are made after God’s image? For as Basil, that much-versed expounder of divine things, says, the honor given to the image passes over to the prototype. Now a prototype is that which is imaged, from which the derivative is obtained. Why was it that the Mosaic people honored on all hands the tabernacle which bore an image and type of heavenly things, or rather of the whole creation? God indeed said to Moses, Look that thou make them after their pattern which was showed you in the mount. The Cherubim, too, which overshadow the mercy seat, are they not the work of men’s hands? What, further, is the celebrated temple at Jerusalem? Is it not hand-made and fashioned by the skill of men?”

Indeed, when he was on the cross, he said in reference to his persecutors who were slandering him, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing,” so that he might pray for his slanderers, although he could have forgiven them himself. PILGRIM VOCATION ICON PROGRAM:

“The Call of the Disciples” Pilgrim Vocation Icon Program: Our Lord reminds us that “the harvest is truly plentiful but the laborers are few. Pray, therefore, the Lord of the harvest that he send laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38). As Christian faithful we all have a responsibility to foster future leaders of the Church-priests, deacons, nuns and monks-dedicated to serving God’s people. One way we can be involved in the nurturing of vocations is to pray. Next Sunday begins a special time of prayer for vocations for the Byzantine Catholic Church in the United States. Every parish has received an icon specially written for this program. Those who accept the icon agree to pray daily during that time for religious and priestly vocations. Every member of the parish is invited to have “The Call of the Disciples” icon in their home for a week of special prayer for vocations. Prayer booklets are provided. The Secret of the Peace We Need

Those who are engaged in spiritual warfare must always keep their hearts tranquil. Only then can the mind sift the impulses it receives and store in the treasure house of the memory those that are good and come from God, while rejecting altogether those that are perverse and devilish. “When the sea is calm, the fishermen’s eyes can see the movements of the fish deep down, so that hardly any of them can escape. But when the sea is ruffled by the wind, the turmoil of the waves hides from sight the creatures that would easily have been seen if the sea wore the smile of calm. The skill of the fisherman is of little use in rough weather. Something of the same sort happens with the soul, especially when it is stirred to the depths by anger. At the beginning of a storm, oil is poured on the waters to calm them, and in fact the oil defeats their commotion. In this way, when the soul receives the anointing of the gift of the Holy Spirit, it gladly gives in to this inexpressible and untroubled sweetness. And even if it is continually attacked by temptation, it maintains its peace and joy.

Prayer is integral in the process of nurturing Church vocations. On Sunday, October 5th, the entire Byzantine Catholic Church in America is beginning a Pilgrim Vocation Icon Program. Each week, the icon is taken by a household in the parish. Those who accept the icon agree to pray daily during that time for religious and priestly vocations. Everyone in the parish is invited and encouraged to have this icon in their home for one week. Prayer booklets are provided. Please see the sign-up sheet in the vestibule. Please see Fr. Michael for further information.

the enjoyment OF earthly goods.

Clement of Alexandria: Those who neglect good works may fail to grasp just how much the good work of God has benefited them. Hence, they are less capable of praying fittingly so as to receive good things from God. And even if they receive them, they will likely be unaware of what has been given them. And even if they enjoy them, they will not enjoy worthily what they have not understood. For from their lack of knowledge they will not grasp how to use the good things given them. And from their impulsiveness they will remain ignorant of how to avail themselves of the divine gifts offered. Stromata 6.14.

HOLY CROSS

Let us not be ashamed to confess the Crucified. Let the Cross be our seal, made with boldness by our fingers on our brow, and on everything; over the bread we eat, and the cups we drink; in our comings in, and goings out; before we sleep, and when we rise up; when we are on the road, and when we are still. Great is that preservative; it is without price… it is the Sign of the faithful, and the dread of devils: for He triumphed over them in it, having made a show of them openly for when they see the Cross they are reminded of the Crucified; they are afraid of Him, who bruised the head of the serpent.

THE CROSS RAISED FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE.

ANDREW OF CRETE: The cross is raised and appears above the earth, which until recently malice had kept hidden. It is raised, not to receive glory (for with Christ nailed to it what greater glory could it have?) but to give glory to God who is worshiped on it and proclaimed by it…. It is not surprising that the church rejoices in the cross of Christ and robes herself in festal clothes, revealing her bridal beauty as she honors this day. Nor is it surprising that this great throng of people has gathered together today to see the cross exposed aloft and to worship Christ whom they see raised upon it. For the cross is exposed in order to be raised and is raised to be exposed.

What cross? The cross, which a little while ago was hidden in a place called The Skull but now is everywhere adored. This is what we rejoice over today; this is what we celebrate; this is the point of the present feast; this is the manifestation of the mystery…. For this hidden and life-giving cross had to be exposed, set on high like a city on a hill or a lamp on a stand, for all the world to see. HOMILY II ON THE EXALTATION OF THE VENERABLE CROSS.

The law and life. Origen: These commandments are sufficient for someone entering on the ground level of the path of eternal life. But they are not sufficient to lead one to the higher life, and certainly not to perfection. One who fails in just one of these commandments cannot even enter the beginnings of life. Anyone who wishes to enter the early stages of the path of life must be free from adultery and murder and any kind of theft. For just as the adulterer and murderer will not enter into life, so neither will the thief. Many of those who are said to believe in Christ are guilty of this sin. Just look at their daily business and the way money is entrusted to them and the crafts they practice. commentary on Matthew 15.13.

11th Sunday After Pentecost

Orthodox Study Bible

18:21-35 Unlimited forgiveness toward a brother or sister is illustrated by this parable. Sin is portrayed as a debt to God (6:12), a: debt originated by neglecting God’s will. Ten thousand talents (v. 24) as an impossible sum, more than a laborer could earn in all lifetime – is contrasted to a hundred denarii (v. 28), equivalent to about a hundred days’ wages. Just as the king shows mercy and severity toward the servant, so does God show love and strictness toward us depending on our willingness to forgive our brothers and sisters., The love of God is manifested in paying off the debt, a remission or letting go of sins. Because God forgives us, we in return are obliged to grant this gift of forgiveness to others. When each Christian forgives from his heart (v. 35), true reconciliation and healing come to the Church by God’s grace.
